Dangerous goods are exempt from the regulations in quantities up to 150kg per vehicle (gross mass)
Each package or container:
- must not exceed 30 kg (limit for gases is 46-litre cylinder capacity)
- must be strong and secure enough that it will not spill or leak (container does not require a certification mark, unless it is a gas cylinder)
The exemption cannot be used for the items below or for any explosives (Class 1) except:
- UN 0044, UN 0105, UN 0131, UN 0161, UN 0323, UN 0335 (if classified as a consumer firework), UN 0336, UN 0337, UN 0351, UN 0373, UN 0404, UN 0405, UN 0431, UN 0432, UN 0454, UN 0499
- UN 0012, UN 0014 and UN 0055 if the cartridges are for shotguns or, in the case of cartridges for rifles or pistols, the calibre is less than 12.7 mm (50 calibre)
The 150-kg exemption cannot be used for:
- Class 2.1 (Flammable Gases) in cylinders larger than 46-litre capacity
- Class 2.3 (Toxic Gases)
- Class 4, Packing Group I (Flammable Solids, Spontaneously Combustible, Dangerous When Wet)
- Class 5.2 (Organic Peroxides) unless they are limited quantities
- Class 6.1 (Toxic) Packing Group I, liquids
- Class 6.2 (Infectious)
- Class 7 (Radioactive) that requires licensing by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission
- dangerous goods that require an ERAP, or a control or emergency temperature
