| Class 6 - Toxic Substances and Infectious Substances |
Class 6 has two divisions:
6.1 - A solid or liquid that is toxic through inhalation, by skin contact or by ingestion.
Commonly used as a germicide or general disinfectant (example: phenol).
6.2 - Micro-organisms that are infectious or that are reasonably believed to be
infectious to humans or animals.
Commonly used in disease research (example: rabies virus).
Infectious substances are divided into 2 categories. (Class 6.2)
Category A
Infectious substances in Category A are known or suspected to cause disease.
The label and placard show a "biomedical" symbol, and the label specific emergency instructions.
There are 2 shipping names for Category A:
- Infectious substances, affecting humans - UN 2814
- Infectious substances, affecting animals - UN 2900
Category B
There is only one shipping name for Category B:
- Biological substance, Category B
Packing Groups
The level of danger is based on testing the substance on laboratory animals (usually rats) to find out the quantity or concentration required to kill 50% of the test group.
The tests are called LD50
