Respiratory Protection - Air purifying Respirators
  1. Air Purifying Respirators (APR's)

    • Worker breaths the air that is in the immediate atmosphere
    • Air-purifying respirators remove contaminants in the air that is breathed by filtering out particulates (e.g. dusts, metal fumes, mists, etc.)

  2. Supplied Air Respirators (SAR's)

    • Supplied-air respirators supply clean air from a compressed air tank or through an air line
    • This air is not from the work environment and must meet certain standards for purity and moisture content
    • These respirators include the self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and the supplied air breathing apparatus (SABA)

  3. Breathing Equipment

    • The worker ensures the mask forms an adequate seal on his/her face
    • The correct respirator is used
    • You know when and how to put it on and take it off
    • You have stored it and kept it in working order in accordance with manufacturer's instructions

Breathing equipment must be inspected before each use.

If breathing equipment is not used on a regular basis (e.g. daily or weekly), it must inspected at least once a month.
